In his audio drama”Negotiating Religious Sound in Public Space” Charalambos Ganotis explores the legal evaluation of bell-ringing in Germany, presenting an excerpt from a legislative text on the regulation of sound levels.

Brian Larkin examines the significance of media, sound, noise, distribution and piracy in Nigeria. He will be speaking on the deployment of acoustic equipment in the public space, in particular loudspeakers: A description and analysis of a sometimes highly aggressive competition pursued by religious groups in Jos, a city in which Islam and Christianity compete with one another.

In 2010 and 2011 Adé Bantu initiated Hip-Hop workshops in Kano and Lagos, bringing together newcomers from the Nigerian Hip-Hop scene, who, as members of Christian and Muslim communities, thematise the role of religion in their texts. Bantu will report on the multi-religious and multi-ethnic production processes employed in the workshops. The MCs Big Daddy Fresh, Protek, and Special Ag ent Snypa will be presenting the results live.

Over the course of recent years Thomas Burkhalter has collected audio and interview material from diverse cities around the world in which the theme of religion occurs repeatedly. He will be presenting soundscapes from the Arab world, playing and commenting on contemporary religious music from Nigeria, Turkey, Brazil, Lebanon and…
